Those responsible for sports pitches must work with nature and the materials and equipment at their disposal to produce and maintain a healthy, durable and resilient playing surface. This course provides a basic overview of the requirements for maintaining winter games pitches over the course of a calendar year, and the working practices, machinery, equipment and materials used for maintenance and renovations. This theory-based training course focuses on the requirements of natural turf pitches used for rugby and football. It takes place on-site and is delivered by a skilled and experienced grounds professional who is also a Lantra Approved Instructor.

You’ll receive general information as well as advice and guidance specific to your own particular venue. By developing your knowledge and skills and applying them in your working practices, you’ll be ready to address any issues that arise and you’ll enhance the playing experience for all those who use your facility. By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
- Understand the role of the grounds person in sport
- Have a basic understanding of the Health & Safety relevant to the industry in conjunction with industry best practices
- Understand the key requirements for the maintenance of natural sports turf surfaces during the playing season and for end of season renovations
- Develop a basic knowledge of the materials used for the maintenance and renovation of sports pitches
- Develop an understanding of the machinery and equipment used on these surfaces and the role they play in the maintenance and/or renovation process
- Develop a basic knowledge of the weeds, pests and diseases that can affect natural turf surfaces
- Know how to develop their personal knowledge and skills through further learning

Who should attend?
Anyone involved in, or responsible for, the preparation and maintenance of natural sports turf surfaces for rugby and football, either in the course of their employment or as a volunteer. While this course is intended for learners involved in grassroots sport, content is tailored to each venue and the knowledge and experience of the learners.What will be covered?
