Clinical Animal Behaviourists help owners of animals such as horses, dogs, cats, birds and other small companion animals to resolve their pets’ behaviour issues.
Animals are referred to the Behaviourist by a veterinarian, and Clinical Animal Behaviourists work with owners to establish the animal’s history. After observing the animal’s behaviour, they diagnose the problem and implement a programme for the owner to follow to change the behaviour.

You’ll need:
experience of working with animals and care about animal welfare
physical skills such as mobility and co-ordination, and a good level of fitness
excellent communication skills and enjoy working with animals and people
to be thorough and pay attention to detail, with good observation skills
to be organised and set your own schedule, but flexible to customer needs
patience when working with new animals
to carry out administrative tasks on a computer or hand-held device
Clinical Animal Behaviourists are not regulated in the UK; however, you can voluntarily become a member of organisations such as the Association for Pet Behaviour Counsellors (APBC) or other Animal Behaviour and Training Council (ABTC), or the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour (ASAB) who run an accreditation scheme against specific validated courses to become a Certificated Clinical Animal Behaviourist (CCAB).
Around 35-40 hours per week. Many Behaviourists are self-employed and can choose their hours of work. Others work with animal care organisations, with part-time work being available.
Talking to owners, learning the full history of the animal to try and establish the background behind the behavioural issue
Observing animal’s behaviours e.g. fear/aggression /separation anxiety
Interpreting the likely underlying causes of the issue
Writing reports/programmes to change the behaviour for the owner to implement
Arrange follow-up appointments
Carry out an evaluation of progress and continue to provide support to owners
Adapting the programme where necessary
Animal behaviour consultations may take place in a clinic, the owner’s home, or in an outside location such as livery stables. There may be a significant amount of travelling between different client sites.
