A career as an Animal Boarding Manager

Animal Boarding Manager oversee the activities of an animal boarding centre and the care of dogs and cats, and other animals either while their owners are on holiday, or because they are strays or waiting to be re-homed.

Some boarding sites have space for just a few animals, while others may have around one hundred at a time. Customers may want to look around the site before making a booking for their animal or leave information around any medications or special diets their pet has – Animal Boarding Managers will make sure accurate records are kept.

You'll need:

  • knowledge of small animal care and welfare

  • to be thorough and pay attention to detail

  • to be flexible and open to change

  • patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations

  • to work well with and direct the work of others

  • the ability to work well under pressure

  • excellent customer service skills

  • excellent verbal communication skills

  • to be practical and prepared to deal with dirt and waste

If you are required to collect and drop off animals, you will need a full clean driving licence and access to a vehicle.

Around 35-40 hours per week.  Animal Boarding Managers may be required to work irregular hours that can include evenings and weekends.  They will often be expected to cover when staff are off sick or on holiday.

Day to Day
  • Co-ordinate and oversee operations for the boarding site

  • Hire, train, and supervise other workers

  • Create work schedules and rotas

  • Ensure cages, runs, and the overall facility are cleaned on a regular basis

  • Ensure the animals are groomed, fed, exercised, and generally cared for

  • Monitor the behaviour and health of boarded animals

  • Prepare reports concerning facility activities, employees' time records, and animal treatment

Working Environment

Much of the work is outdoors, in all weathers. Boarding areas can sometimes be quite cold, smelly and often noisy. The work involves regular dog walking and bending to clean out kennels. You may need to wear protective clothing (PPE) when cleaning.

  • During 2021, the Dog Trust charity in the Republic of Ireland received 2,155 requests from people wanting to rehome a dog, and increase on the previous year of 82%

What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a unique blend of work experience and study to help build the skills and knowledge you need for your career. Apprentices are employees – they have a contract, are paid and get the same benefits as everyone else. But the difference between an apprenticeship and a normal job is that apprentices are regularly released from work for training. Sometimes that’s a day a week, sometimes it’s for a longer block – it all depends on the job and the apprenticeship.

Apprentices work for all kinds of people at all kinds of stages in their lives. Most apprentices fall into one of three categories:

  • someone who is just starting their career
  • someone who already has a job and wants to move forward in their company
  • someone who already has a job and wants to retrain to make a career change.

Previously restricted to school leavers and young people, apprenticeships are now a dynamic way of retraining people of all ages - there’s no upper age limit. The minimum age to become an apprentice is 16 and candidates can’t be in full-time education.
