Master Technicians maintain equipment used in forestry, farming, horticulture and ground care and sports facilities. They keep equipment in good working order through planned maintenance and carrying out diagnostic and repair work.
Master Technicians will have knowledge of many different types of equipment and use a wide range of specialist tools, including diagnostic equipment and laptops.
Master Technicians support the development of other technicians within a business and provide feedback to manufactures to support the update and development of new and existing machines and equipment.
Master Technicians can be either employed by a dealership or self-employed.
You’ll need:
a good understanding and knowledge of land-based machinery, different engineering parts and their functions
to use a computer and diagnostic equipment
physical skills such as mobility and co-ordination, and a good level of fitness
to coach and motivate a team of technicians
to use your initiative and be decisive
A driving licence is necessary, and you will be given a vehicle to visit customers, diagnosing issues and carry out repairs on-site.
Around 40 hours a week, with call-out shifts and overtime. This may include early mornings, evenings and weekends, to meet deadlines and seasonal requirements.
Run diagnostic tests on land-based machinery and equipment
Investigate and adjust machine settings with IT, recording and analysing data
Carry out repairs or adjust equipment to operate correctly and efficiently – this may include using welding techniques
Check parts availability with the service warehouse
Replace parts or make new parts if necessary
Provide feedback to manufacturers to support the development of parts and equipment
Coach and mentor other technicians, and support management activity
Master Technicians work in workshops or on site from mobile workshops vans. You will spend time travelling to and from customers’ premises where it may be necessary to work outside, in all terrains and weather conditions.
Working with land-based engineering equipment can be hazardous, and you may need to wear protective clothing, high-visibility vests, hard hats, safety glasses and welding aprons.

The Land-based Technician Accreditation (LTA) scheme is unique to the land-based engineering industry and sets out a recognised career path for Technicians, Parts Advisors and After Market Professionals. There are three tiers for technicians – Intermediate, Advanced and Master, encouraging development and created with manufacturers to provide a benchmark for the industry. Master tier requires a minimum of 5 years’ experience in the industry, taken an advanced diagnostic training course and passed the assessments.
After becoming a Master Technician, you may wish to become self-employed. You could also move into training within a college or into sales or managerial positions. It is important to keep updating your skills so you can continue to work on new equipment.
