Horticulturists are responsible for increasing yield, improving robustness, size, and taste of plants, depending on their specialist area. They also co-ordinate research programs for selective crops, making them more resistant to disease or drought, for example. Horticulturists must have extensive knowledge about trees, flowers, vegetables, nuts, bushes, and fruits.
There are two main areas Horticulturists work in:
Amenity Horticulturists create and manage a variety of leisure, recreational and garden areas
Commercial or Production Horticulturists specialise in field crops, protected crops, soft and top fruit, nursery stock or cut flowers

You’ll need:
knowledge and understanding of horticulture, with practical cultivation skills
excellent planning skills and a good eye for detail
to organise and manage your own workload
good problem-solving skills
good communication and interpersonal skills
project management, management, and leadership skills
a hands-on, practical approach to work
numeracy, administration and IT skills
a flexible approach to working in a busy and varied environment
knowledge of health and safety regulations and procedures
physical skills such as mobility and co-ordination
A full driving licence can be useful if working between and visiting clients. You'll need to take courses and gain certificates of competence to operate equipment and use machinery. Different Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) will be recommended for each work situation.
35-40 hours per week. Working hours will vary according to the season and sector.
Oversee the production and care of plants, fruits and vegetables
Manage crop scheduling for timing of appropriate planting and harvesting
Perform propagation, irrigation, and pest management of plants
Control plant growth regulation through mixing and testing fertilisers
Responsible for greenhouse environment management
Direct crop management with the support of the wider growing/production team
Analyse yields, operational costs and financial returns of horticultural operations
Ensure that quality, hygiene, health and safety and employment standards and regulations are met
Keep up to date in your specialist area and in developments in the whole horticultural sector
Conduct environmental assessments
Manage contractors and negotiate with suppliers and buyers
Although the work has become increasing office based, there will still be times when work is outside in all weathers.
Travel within a working day is frequent and may be between sites or visiting suppliers and buyers.

For Amenity Horticulturists, there may be opportunities to transfer to landscape architecture, design and planning consultancy or to move into other areas such as education.
With experience as a Commercial/Production setting, you'll could go on to supervise teams of workers in the production, marketing or retail operations. You could become involved in the management and business development of commercial enterprises.

The Republic of Ireland's horticulture industry is valued at €477m; it is the fourth largest industry after dairy, beef and pigs in terms of gross agricultural commodity output value
The industry employs approximately 17,000 people in the Republic of Ireland - an estimated 6,600 people directly employed full-time and another 11,000 indirectly employed in value-added and downstream businesses
