Grounds Maintenance Managers plan, develop and maintain open spaces. They ensure that developments are suitable and advise others on the long-term care of the landscape.

Grounds Maintenance Managers supervise teams of grounds staff who grow and look after plants in public parks, private and botanical gardens, borders and open green spaces.

Grounds Managers rarely carry out practical work themselves, but they do use their knowledge of plants and the environment to advise others. They are responsible for the maintenance and development of grounds within agreed budgets.

Skills/Knowledge

You’ll need:

  • general knowledge of plant and horticulture including soils, nutrition, weed control, etc.

  • experience of managing a large green space

  • a good knowledge of horticultural machinery and be able to carry out small repairs

  • physical skills such as mobility and co-ordination, and a good level of fitness

  • good communication and customer service skills

  • to be aware of health and safety procedures and relevant regulations

  • experience of supervising staff and planning their work

  • experience of managing a monthly budget

A driving licence and being able to pull a trailer is necessary.

You’ll need to have achieved qualifications and certificates of competence to apply pesticides safely - these will include a mandatory Safe Use of Pesticides qualification, followed by the method of application being used e.g. hand held equipment, etc. You'll also need to take courses and gain certificates of competence to operate equipment and use machinery.

Typical Hours

Around 37-40 hours a week, Monday to Friday, with hours and shifts varying over the year. In the growing season, they often start very early in the morning. They need to be flexible and willing to work extra hours when required.

Day to Day
  • Manage staff and contractors, and brief on a regular basis

  • Plan and oversee new planting schemes

  • Oversee regular maintenance and care of grounds and gardens

  • Prepare and review budgets

  • Purchase seeds, plants, machinery and equipment as required

  • Work and consult with the local community when needed, promoting the use of open spaces to the public

  • Maintain and repair machinery and equipment

Working Environment

Garden Maintenance Managers hold permanent positions. You’ll work outdoors in all weathers but some of the jobs will be desk-based. Some jobs involve regular contact with the public.

You may also have to climb ladders, use noisy machinery or apply chemicals to improve soils or kill pests and diseases.

What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a unique blend of work experience and study to help build the skills and knowledge you need for your career. Apprentices are employees – they have a contract, are paid and get the same benefits as everyone else. But the difference between an apprenticeship and a normal job is that apprentices are regularly released from work for training. Sometimes that’s a day a week, sometimes it’s for a longer block – it all depends on the job and the apprenticeship.

Apprentices work for all kinds of people at all kinds of stages in their lives. Most apprentices fall into one of three categories:

  • someone who is just starting their career
  • someone who already has a job and wants to move forward in their company
  • someone who already has a job and wants to retrain to make a career change.

Previously restricted to school leavers and young people, apprenticeships are now a dynamic way of retraining people of all ages - there’s no upper age limit. The minimum age to become an apprentice is 16 and candidates can’t be in full-time education.
