A Head Groundsperson is responsible for the overall management, maintenance, care and appearance of sports grounds and pitches. These can include sports grounds in schools, universities, local authorities and private grounds like premier league sports clubs and national venues. It is their job to maintain a good and safe playing surface – this could be natural turf, synthetic turf or a combination.
Head Groundspeople are also responsible for managing budgets, staff and purchasing of machinery and products as well as advising on and implementing annual maintenance programmes and renovations. Jobs are available throughout the country, with the most opportunities in more heavily populated areas.

You’ll need:
an interest and knowledge of the relevant sport and the challenges players face
great practical knowledge of sports turf, plant and soil science
a knowledge of irrigation/draining methods and equipment
good management and budgetary skills
good administrative skills and attention to detail
good communication skills and able to connect with different audiences
patience and the ability to stay calm under pressure
A full DBS, Disclosure Scotland or Garda Vetting check may be required if the role involves working with children or vulnerable people. A driving licence can be useful if covering a large site or travelling between several sites.
You’ll need to have achieved qualifications and certificates of competence to apply pesticides safely - these will include a mandatory Safe Use of Pesticides qualification, followed by the method of application being used e.g. hand held equipment, etc. You'll also need to take courses and gain certificates of competence to operate equipment and use machinery.
Around 37-40 hours a week. Hours depend on the time of year, location and the timing of events, matches or tournaments. Hours can be unsociable, especially when working for professional sports clubs holding matches under floodlights.
Ensure the playing surface is maintained to the requirements of the sporting body regulations and safe for players
Tour the grounds/pitch daily, especially near to a important event or match
Oversee the construction of new surfaces in line with design plans
Manage budgets, finance and resources
Manage recruitment, selection and training of staff
Direct and motivate staff and contractors
Compose and manage the course environmental policy
Manage specific projects and events
You’ll spend your time between outdoors on the grounds or pitch and office–based, dealing with management aspects of the facilities. You may need to travel around one large site or between several sites.
