This new two-day course is designed for sports turf operatives, greenkeepers and grounds care mechanics seeking to develop their skills and knowledge in safe and effective mower set-up, using professional fine turf and sports turf equipment.  The outline of the course is to learn the details of sharpening, blade grinding, mower set-up, quality of cut and mowing faults and associated health and safety legal requirements.

The finer details

This course is designed for those who wish to understand principles of working safely while, grinding, mowing and conducting mechanical works.  The focus of the course is mower set-up, ensuring the correct set-up of blades for a specific mowing operation e.g. mowing different grass types and sports turf surfaces.  The quality of the cutting set-up is highlighted as major factor in mower set-up throughout this course.  The preparation of mowing equipment ansd use of grinding equipment to sharpen cylinder mowers safely is also a significant part of the training.  Agronomical benefits to sports turf health and performance are evaluated through the training.  Identifying mowing faults and incorrect set-up and delivered skills to assist operatives in their future mower set-ups following the course.

  • Understand principles of working safely while, grinding, mowing and conducting mechanical works.
  • Understand the importance of the correct bottom blade selection for the ‘actual’ height of cut (HOC).  Understand and set up angles/shear point position.  Understand clip rate relevant to actual HOC.
  • Prepare mowing equipment for grinding of cutting blades.
  • Operate grinding equipment safely.
  • Prepare mowers for cutting to a high standard.
  • Understand a range of agronomical benefits of correct mower set-up.
  • Investigate mowing faults and rectify.
