This four day attendance course will enable you to erect a strained wire fence using hand tools. A fence is typically an upright structure made from a variety of materials and styles that are primarily constructed to demarcate boundaries, enclose or exclude livestock and wildlife, provide security, direct movement, and maintain a perimeter, using a wide variety of materials and styles which are outlined within design specifications.
The Workbook has been produced to accompany an ScJ Training Ltd course in association with DRB Training. It is written to give broad guidelines and is not specific to any brand or style of fence or gate. Methods of installing, inspecting and adjusting specific types of fence and gates should be obtained from the manufacturer’s specifications.
Learners will learn how to erect strained wire fences and install gates using hand tools with a view to them then going on to do further training / Lantra courses in fencing.
The course is broken down into three sessions:

- Post and Strained Wire Fencing Systems
- Gates

Who should attend?
This product is an introductory course and as such it is open to a wide range of Learners who require knowledge and practical experience in Strained Wire Fencing for Livestock or Wildlife purposes.
It is designed as a stepping stone on to more advanced assessed courses should the Learner wish to progress on to these.
You must be 16 or over in order to register for this course.
What will be covered?
At the end of this course the Learner should be able to:
Preparation
• Describe the requirements of health, safety and environmental legislation.
• Identify the hazards associated with the installation of fences and gates and put the appropriate control measures in place.
• Interpret and comply with specifications, schedules and risk assessments related to the installation of fences and gates.
• Explain the requirements of pre-installation inspections of the proposed worksite.
• Identify the hazards associated with excavating and define the appropriate control measures to eliminate or reduce risks to health and safety.
Post and strained wire fence systems
• Describe the purpose and components of post and strained wire fence systems.
• Describe the materials and installation requirements for post and strained wire fence systems.
• Select and prepare tools, equipment and resources for post and strained wire fence systems.
• Demonstrate how to calculate the required materials for post and strained wire fence systems.
• Demonstrate how to position and fix posts at specified lines, levels, and angles.
• Prepare and install post and strained wire components to meet specifications.
Gates
• Describe the purpose and components of various types of gates.
• Describe the materials and installation requirements for gates.
• Select and prepare tools, equipment, and resources for gates.
• Demonstrate how to position and fix posts.
• Prepare and install gate components to meet specifications.
