Individual and businesses registered with Farming Connect (courses delivered in Wales only)What will be covered?
- Understand the basic principles of how to measure and assess body condition score in sheep on a 5-point scale
- Identify the critical points in the production cycle when incorrect nutrition and BCS may have a detrimental effect on efficiency and production.
- Understand that decisions made about nutrition will affect the productivity of the flock, and that such decisions need to be made on a farm-by-farm basis and be based on the condition score of the flock and available feed
- Recall the target body condition score for ewes and rams at each stage of production, and understand the risks of failing to meet these targets.
- Appreciate the role of health planning with regard to metabolic disease testing and trace element supplementation.
- Identify common production losses associated with poor management of nutrition and discuss basic economic consequences of these losses.
- Understand the environmental benefit of good nutritional management
