The finer details

The course starts with a 2-hour classroom-based session covering the knowledge element of successful brick laying. Topics covered include; driveways and planning regulations, permeable paving, sustainable urban drainage systems, block paving types, kerbs and edge restraints, the sequence of layers, laying patterns and cutting, finishing, maintenance, potential issues. The remainder of the course is hands-on, with the learners putting into practice skills demonstrated to them by a top industry professional. Delivery of the course ends at around lunchtime on the second day at which point the candidate is assessed on the knowledge and skills learned during the course, by way of a multiple-choice knowledge test followed by a 2-hour practical assessment.

The course is ideal for those that have been working in landscaping and have some experience in block paving but would like to learn all of the fundamentals in an intermediary courses to bring them in line with industry best practice.

What will be covered?

By the end of the course, the learner will be able to:

State the differences between Rigid and Flexible paving and the pros and cons of each (K)
 
Explain the planning regulations relating to the construction of driveways using block paving (K)
 
Describe the construction levels, excavation depths and backfill materials used in block paving (K)
 
Describe the materials and construction techniques involved in the installation of permeable paving and SUDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) (K)
 
Describe the materials and demonstrate the construction techniques involved in the installation of edge restraints (K + S)
 
Describe the materials and demonstrate the construction techniques involved in the preparation of the laying surface (K + S)
 
State the different types of block paviours currently available and their uses. (K)
 
Set out a range of commonly used bonding patterns, including 90° and 45° Herringbone, Basket Weave and Running Bond. (S)
 
Cut in blocks safely and accurately using appropriate equipment. (S)
 
Finish the paved surface to a professional standard (S)
 
Describe the industry-recommended maintenance procedures for a looking after a block paved surface (K)
