A great 2 day course that introduces the fundamental theory and practical skills of deck construction. The course not only covers the construction techniques involved in installing a structurally sound sub-frame, but also the physical properties of the timber itself, joist and beam span considerations, planning and building regulations and the selection and fitting of decking boards. The course is an excellent stepping stone to the specialist manufacturer decking courses also offered by TASK.

The finer details

The course starts with a 2-hour classroom-based session covering the knowledge element of successful brick laying. Topics covered include; understanding what a deck is, timber durability and industry standards for service life, timber selection for decking, components of a deck and classification, joists, understanding the differences between soft wood, hardwood, composite and plastic boards,  deck board fixings, planning permission and building regulations approval. The remainder of the course is hands-on, with the learners putting into practice skills demonstrated to them by a top industry professional. Delivery of the course ends at around lunchtime on the second day at which point the candidate is assessed on the knowledge and skills learned during the course, by way of a multiple-choice knowledge test followed by a 2-hour practical assessment.

Who should attend?

The course is ideal for those that have been working in landscaping and have some experience in decking installation but would like to learn all of the fundamentals in an intermediary courses to bring them in line with industry best practice.

  1. Set out a decking structure in accordance with EC5 

 

  1. Understand planning permission pertaining to decking in a domestic situation

 

  1. Appreciate building regulations regarding step construction

 

  1. Understand the limitations of laying out posts, beams and joists.

 

  1. Identify the correct post, beam, joist and decking spans to EC5 standards

     

  2. Follow the decking guidelines promulgated by the Association of Professional Landscapers

     

  3. Demonstrate the practically ability to correctly build a decking structure
