A practical and informative course offering a comprehensive and industry approved introduction to the laying of natural stone paving. 

Not only are laying techniques covered, but also preparation of bases and sub-bases, setting out of areas and levels, calculating falls, creating the perfect mortar mix and using tried and tested jointing techniques. A ‘must-do’ course for anyone considering constructing a patio.

The finer details

The course starts with a 2-hour classroom-based session covering the knowledge element of successful paving. Topics covered include Health and Safety, choice of materials, setting out, calculating falls, and evaluation of good and not-so-good practice prevalent in the industry today. The remainder of the course is hands-on, with the learners putting into practice skills demonstrated to them by a top industry professional. Delivery of the course ends at around lunchtime on the second day at which point the candidate is assessed on the knowledge and skills learned during the course, by way of a multiple-choice knowledge test followed by a 2-hour practical assessment.

Who should attend?

The course is ideal for those starting out in the world of paving or who have some experience but need a refresher and to fill in any gaps in their skill set to bring them in line with industry best practice

What will be covered?

By the end of the course, the learner will:

  • Know and be able to describe the advantages and disadvantages of natural stone vs man made products (K)
  • Understand the principles of site safety, organisation and professional working practices when creating a paved area (K)
  • Be able to risk assess the proposed work area for hazards and obstacles and know how to detect and work around underground services. (K + S)
  • Know how to establish and make safe access route for materials, equipment etc (K)
  • Be able to set out the area intended for paving using 3:4:5 triangles (Pythagoras’ theorem) and other geometric principles. (K + S)
  • Be able to calculate and set falls and gradients appropriate to the conditions and materials being used (K + S)
  • Know how to excavate the intended paved area accurately and dispose of spoil appropriately. (K)
  • Understand and be able to describe the terms Sub-grade, Formation level, Sub-base, Base, Bedding course, Wearing course and the construction requirements for each. (K)
  • Be able to create a suitable and effective mortar mix for the intended paving (S)
  • Know a variety of effective and less effective slab laying techniques and be able to evaluate each (K)
  • Know and be able to execute a variety of jointing options and techniques (K + S)
