This course will cover the regulations of the capstan winch as well as the associated equipment.
Capstan winch operation has the potential to very quickly become hazardous & dangerous if the operator & others in it vicinity do not understand the dangers of being involved the operation or its operating vicinity.
This course will allow the operator to understand & apply sound knowledge of the task & will greatly improve the safe & successful operation for the operators & other employees involved in the operation.

- Know a range of tasks for which Capstan/Winch is capable
- Understand legislation & safety requirements necessary for the use operate capstans
- Understand the purpose of the machine components, their functions & controls
- Explain the SWL, MBL & other ancillary equipment used
- Demonstrate correct planning by producing a lift plan for winching operations including ability to recognise conditions that limit the procedure and use of assistants
- The main causes of accidents, the significant dangers of equipment/ancillary equipment failure
- Minimum Personal Protective equipment & the hierarchy of risk control
- Examples of injuries already occurred in the industry locally & the consequences
- Carry out routine operator maintenance procedures for the equipment to prescribed standards
- Demonstrate effective operation of the Capstan
- Set up Capstan in safe mode
- Vessel position in relation to capstan, on off controls & snapback zones
- Select correct personnel and knowledge of and the dangers of snapback zones
- Operate capstan within safe working parameters & to a consistent standard
- Correct use of signals for capstan winch
- Inspection of equipment after use
