This course will cover the regulations of the capstan winch as well as the associated equipment.

Capstan winch operation has the potential to very quickly become hazardous & dangerous if the operator & others in it vicinity do not understand the dangers of being involved the operation or its operating vicinity.

This course will allow the operator to understand & apply sound knowledge of the task & will greatly improve the safe & successful operation for the operators & other employees involved in the operation.

  • Know a range of tasks for which Capstan/Winch is capable
  • Understand legislation & safety requirements necessary for the use operate capstans
  • Understand the purpose of the machine components, their functions & controls
  • Explain the SWL, MBL & other ancillary equipment used
  • Demonstrate correct planning by producing a lift plan for winching operations including ability to recognise conditions that limit the procedure and use of assistants
  • The main causes of accidents, the significant dangers of equipment/ancillary equipment failure
  • Minimum Personal Protective equipment & the hierarchy of risk control
  • Examples of injuries already occurred in the industry locally & the consequences
  • Carry out routine operator maintenance procedures for the equipment to prescribed standards
  • Demonstrate effective operation of the Capstan
  • Set up Capstan in safe mode
  • Vessel position in relation to capstan, on off controls & snapback zones
  • Select correct personnel and knowledge of and the dangers of snapback zones
  • Operate capstan within safe working parameters & to a consistent standard
  • Correct use of signals for capstan winch
  • Inspection of equipment after use
