To keep your registration current, you must renew your existing certificates every 5 years - as required by legislation.

You can do this by undertaking the initial assessment again (we have 12 Street Works Initial courses available), however reassessment is a more convenient way to achieve this.

This qualification will reassess your knowledge and confidence, so that you can continue to carry out works in the highway safely.

The finer details

This qualification has been developed to reassess your skills and knowledge in carrying out and monitoring work involving the installation, renewal, maintenance and inspection of underground apparatus in the highway.

It covers a range of skills from those who need to safeguard their work by signing lighting and guarding to carrying out excavation and re-instatement work This qualification provides routes to re-registration on the SWQR.

Training can be provided before assessment, but is not compulsory. The assessment will consist of a multiple choice question paper. Assessment will cover:

  • Location and avoidance of underground apparatus
  • Signing, lighting and guarding
  • Excavation in the highway
  • Reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials
  • Reinstatement of sub-base and base in non-bituminous materials
  • Reinstatement in cold lay bituminous materials
  • Reinstatement in hot lay bituminous materials
  • Reinstatement of concrete slabs
  • Reinstatement of modular surfaces, concrete footways.

You can choose from sixteen assessed units of competence for operatives and supervisors.

There are only two mandatory units for operatives. All the other operative units are optional and can be selected based on your job role.

Similarly, there are only two mandatory units for supervisors. All the other supervisory units are optional and can be selected based on your job role.

If successful in meeting the required standards assessed, you will be awarded the corresponding qualification (non-regulated) certificates in your chosen qualification.

You will also be able to re-register on the SWQR, which is required under the New Roads and Street Works Act.

Recognised by

This qualification is recognised by industry and regularly reviewed by the Highways Authorities and Utilities Committee (HAUK UK). This qualification is not reviewed, recognised and monitored by any UK regulatory body (Ofqual, Scottish Qualifications Authority, Qualifications Wales etc).

Who should attend?

This qualification is for you if you are already registered on the SWQR and need to renew your existing certificate(s).

For operators, at the end of this qualification, your practical skills, knowledge and understanding will have been reassessed on:

  • Location and avoidance of underground apparatus
  • Signing, lighting and guarding.

Plus, one or more of these skills:

  • Excavation in the highway
  • Reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials
  • Reinstatement of sub-base and base in non-bituminous materials
  • Reinstatement in cold lay bituminous materials
  • Reinstatement in hot lay bituminous materials
  • Reinstatement of concrete slabs
  • Reinstatement of modular surfaces, concrete footways.

For supervisors, at the end of this qualification, your practical skills, knowledge and understanding will have been reassessed on:

  • Location and avoidance of underground apparatus
  • Monitoring signing, lighting and guarding.

Plus, one or more of these skills:

  • Monitoring excavation in the highway
  • Monitoring reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials
  • Monitoring reinstatement of sub-base and base in non-bituminous materials
  • Monitoring reinstatement in bituminous materials
  • Monitoring reinstatement of concrete slabs
  • Monitoring reinstatement of modular surfaces, concrete footways.
