This is a non-assessed training course.

Rural industry in the Republic of Ireland has a long and proud tradition of giving young workers the opportunity to learn on the job.

Operating tractors is a classic example of that.

But using agricultural machinery involves an element of danger, and tractors are no exception.

Our course enables younger workers to develop or expand on the knowledge required to operate a tractor safely and competently

The finer details

Experienced instructors will guide you through two days of training.

You'll learn how to use the tractor safely and with confidence. The key fundamentals of driving and loading are covered.

You'll observe the instructor working with some of the attachments and hitching systems that make the tractor such a versatile machine.

There are also sessions on accident prevention and important daily checks.

Who should attend?

Our course is suitable for all younger tractor drivers who are either new or have some experience in driving tractors in the agriculture, amenity, forestry, industrial and horticulture industries.

Please note you will need written consent from a parent or guardian to be eligible for this course.

What will be covered?

By the end of the course, you'll know how to:

  • Enter and leave the cab safely
  • Understand the purpose and meaning of the instrumentation
  • Understand the function of all controls
  • Understand the hazards associated with some controls
  • Understand reasons for daily checks
  • Competently perform checking of the lubrication, cooling system and air intake of the engine
  • Perform basic lubrication of the tractor and ensure it is in a safe road-going state
  • Start and stop the engine in a safe manner
  • Be competent in driving a tractor forwards and in reverse
  • Leave the tractor in a safe state
  • Attach a mounted implement and manoeuvre in a forward and reverse direction
  • Attach a trailed implement and manoeuvre in a forward and reverse direction
  • Leave unattached implements in a safe state
  • Comply with legal requirements with an emphasis on safe practice.
