This course will equip you with the knowledge and practical experience to operate post drivers confidently and safely, to protect you and those around you.

This course offers a range of options depending on your needs:

  • Self-propelled
  • Vehicle mounted - demountable
  • Vehicle mounted - fixed
  • Excavator mounted.

The finer details

This training course has been developed to help you understand how to safely operate a post driver.

The amount of instruction you require will depend largely upon your previous experience and sessions will be adapted to meet your needs. Course duration will be one day.

The training course will consist of theory and practical sessions, followed by assessment. Course sessions include:

  • Machine Safety and the Law
  • Machine Knowledge and Preparation for Work
  • Travelling and Manoeuvring the Machine On-site
  • Post Driver Operations
  • Demountable Post Drivers
  • Excavator Mounted Post Drivers
  • Practical Assessment.

If successful in meeting the required standards assessed, you will be awarded a certificate of competence and a Lantra skills ID card for your chosen certificate option.

Who should attend?

This course is for you if you are required to become proficient in the use of a post driver to drive posts into the ground. It is suitable if you are employed in the following industries:

  • Construction (fencing on and off the highway)
  • Agriculture
  • Landscaping.

As you'll appreciate, this course contains some practical activity that will require a minimum level of fitness. If you have any concerns, please speak to the Provider.

What will be covered?

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the main health, safety and environmental legislation relating to using post drivers
  • Interpret and comply with drawings, specifications, schedules, risk assessments and MOMs relating to plant or machinery operations and the work to be carried out
  • Identify the hazards associated with post driver operations and put the appropriate control measures in place
  • Identify and explain the purpose of machine and operator controls
  • Conduct all operational and pre-start checks
  • Operate the post driver to correctly position it ready to drive a post over varying types of terrain
  • Drive posts to the specified line, level and angle
  • Shut down and leave the post driver safe and secure
  • Describe the procedures used for loading and unloading the post driver when transported on a trailer.

Vehicle mounted – demountable:

  • Safely mount a demountable post driver onto a primary vehicle.

    Excavator mounted:

  • Drive the post driver safely over varying types of terrain
  • Operate the post driver to correctly position it ready to drive a post
  • Drive a post to the specified line, level and angle.
