This course will inform candidates of best practice in pruning principles and techniques using hand tools from ground and from a MEWP.  This is a practical course where practice is underpinned by an understanding of the legislation and safety guidelines relating to manual tree pruning and felling operations.

Openreach engineers who require to carry out tree pruning as part of their role.

What will be covered?

The information and practical training provided during this course will enable you to:

  • Appreciate the legislation, safety guidelines and your responsibilities relating to manual tree pruning and felling operations, both from ground and from a MEWP (Mobile Elevated Work Platform)

     

  • Understand the safety considerations to be observed in organising a worksite

     

  • Understand pruning principles/techniques

     

  • Understand small tree felling principles/techniques

     

  • Carry out a range of (BS3998) compliant pruning techniques

     

  • Carry out small tree felling and assisted felling

     

  • ‘Break down’ limbs and small tree crowns using a handsaw to aid disposal/stacking

     

  • Position the MEWP in relation to the tree works

     

  • Operate the MEWP to achieve a suitable work position

     

  • Carry out pruning operations from the MEWP using hand tools

     

  • Tie basic knots to install pulling lines
