About

Mobility scoring can seem to be time consuming, however, if utilised it can allow you to treat lame cows early, saving hours of time treating chronically lame cows, ensuring the health of your cows are maintained.

Lameness affects everything that a cow does on a daily basis. As well as the direct costs – treatment, vets time, extra labour and husbandry, there are also the indirect costs which are not as easy to see – reduced milk yield, reduced body weight, reduced fertility, and premature culling

The finer details

This course is a RoMS - Register Of Mobility Scorers approved course.  Mobility scoring has become a commonly performed recording tool for dairy farmers supplying Supermarket contracts. It is a very good and effective method of both evaluating the level of lameness and the progress made on farm to either reduce levels of lameness or maintain a low level.

Once the course has been completed you can go on to Register with RoMS to become an approved Mobility Scorer  The Register of Mobility Scorers (RoMS) is a self-regulatory body which encourages the use of standardised, independent mobility scoring conducted by trained and accredited scorers.

Who should attend?

This course is suitable for all those wishing to carry out mobility scoring for the benefit of their own herd or to independently mobility score cattle.

What will be covered?

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:
  • Assess the size of the lameness problem, number of cows lame in a herd at any one time. The information collected during the scoring procedure quantifies the level of lame cows and so the severity of the lameness problem in the herd
  • Ability to identify problem animals and provide treatment. As the level of lameness improves – cows with problems can be dealt with sooner
  • By identifying the main lesions of the lame cows, areas on the farm can be looked at that may be the main cause of lameness
  • Understand the potential financial benefits as a result of scoring your herd
  • Be able to score cows consistently
