This course will equip you with the knowledge and confidence to install fencing and gates safely, protecting both you and those around you.

This training course has been developed to help you understand how to install fencing and gates safely.

We have grouped all of our fencing and gate installation products together into this combined course that will cover the following specific modules:

  • Foundation
  • Post and rail
  • Post and strained wire
  • Post and panel
  • Gates and stiles.

The amount of instruction you will require will depend largely upon your previous experience and sessions will be adapted to meet your needs. Course duration will depend on experience and will be from one to four days.

The training course will consist of theory and practical sessions, followed by assessment. Course sessions include:

  • Types of Fence
  • Quality Assurance
  • Quality of Materials
  • Ordering Materials
  • General Process of Installation
  • Breaking Ground and Excavations
  • How to Install Railed Systems
  • How to Install Strained Wire Fencing
  • How to Install Panel Fencing
  • How to Install Gates and Stiles
  • Theory Assessments
  • Practical Assessments.

If successful in meeting the required standards assessed, you will be awarded a certificate of competence and a Lantra skills ID card.

Who should attend?

This course is for you if you need to become proficient in safely installing fencing and gates.

As you'll appreciate, this course contains some practical activity that will require a minimum level of fitness. If you have any concerns, please speak to the Provider.

What will be covered?

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the key requirements of health, safety and environmental legislation
  • Identify the hazards associated with the installation of fences and gates and put the appropriate control measures in place
  • Interpret and comply with drawings, specifications, schedules and risk assessments related to the installation of fences and gates
  • Identify and explain the purpose of various fence systems
  • Define the quality assurance standards relating to fence and gate installations
  • Describe how to inspect materials supplied for fence and gate installations
  • Explain the requirements of pre-installation inspections of the proposed work site
  • Calculate the quantity of materials required for fence and gate installations incorporating variable conditions such as slopes
  • Identify the hazards associated with excavating and define the appropriate control measures to eliminate or reduce risks to health and safety
  • Demonstrate how to safely identify and mark the location of underground services using plans and cable location equipment
  • Describe how to establish lines and levels
  • Describe how posts are positioned and fixed at specified lines, levels and angles
  • Describe how to inspect, repair and test existing fence and gate installations.

Post and Rail

  • Describe the purpose and components of post and rail fence systems
  • Describe the materials and installation requirements for post and rail fence systems
  • Select and prepare tools, equipment and resources for post and rail fence systems
  • Demonstrate how to calculate the required materials for post and rail fence systems
  • Demonstrate how to position and fix posts at specified lines, levels and angles
  • Prepare and install post and rail components to meet specifications
  • Position and securely fix post and rail components at specified lines, levels and heights
  • Demonstrate how to inspect, repair and test post and rail fence systems.

Post and Strained Wire

  • Describe the purpose and components of post and strained wire fence systems
  • Describe the materials and installation requirements for post and strained wire fence systems
  • Select and prepare tools, equipment and resources for post and strained wire fence systems
  • Demonstrate how to calculate the required materials for post and strained wire fence systems
