Utility Arboriculture Basic Electrical Knowledge

Who should attend?

This training course is for all those engaged in conducting vegetation management work in proximity to overhead powerlines.

What will be covered?

The following topics will be covered within the course:

• Understand the necessity for risk assessment documents and what they should contain
• Be aware of electrical utility site hazards including: access, egress, vegetation, weather, tree condition and location
• Demonstrate basic electrical knowledge for working safely within proximity of electrical infrastructure
• Recognise common components of electrical equipment and infrastructure
• Understand conductivity relevant to sapwood, wood smoke, ropes and ladders
• Understand the reasons for vegetation management and the potential damage and supply hazards it may present
• Understand the minimum safety distances relevant to electrical infrastructure
• Understand the hazards and controls relating to isolation and outage working
• Appreciate the effect of electrical load and ambient temperature on conductor height and increased hazards and controls to be implemented
• Understand the significance of category A, B, C and D trees and how to identify trees in each category
• Understand and identify proximity distances
• Understand and identify Vicinity and Live Zones
• Gather and record emergency action information and assist in planning
• Understand the significance of and reason for safety documents
• Understand hazards and controls associated with underground services
• Appreciate the need to be authorised to work in Proximity Zones and how to identify Network Operator’s specific authorisation
• Understand the commonality between electrical infrastructure and other utility infrastructure
• Understand the hazard controls relating to the use of a range of tools and equipment on utility arboriculture and vegetation management works.
