Tyfu Cymru, the leading project supporting horticulture businesses in Wales, has announced a number of free webinars coming up over the next couple of weeks.
Specifically designed for Welsh commercial horticulture businesses, the courses will cover topics such as ornamentals, crop diversification and also manual handling

Ornamental IPDM Network Study Trip - Seiont Nurseries

Join Tyfu Cymru’s Ornamentals IPDM network for a Study Day at Caernarfon based young plant producer Seiont Nurseries. Led by ADAS Consultants David Talbot and Andrew Hewson, the meeting will enable attendees to see and discuss the principles and practices of IPDM (Integrated Pest & Disease Management) in a commercial setting via a structured nursery walk.
Topics covered include:
- crop monitoring
- nursery hygiene and cultural control measures
- seasonal problems / control measures (including the control of fungal / bacterial leaf-spots and downy mildew),
- bio-controls and timely use of suitable plant protection products
This study visit is funded by Tyfu Cymru, and lunch will be provided. Covid safety measures will be in place. Full details will be forwarded to attendees following registration.

Manual Handling - Online Event
Date: Wednesday 22 September 2021
Time: 09:00am - 12:00pm
This 3hr course (run by Call of the Wild) is aimed at those who carry out manual handling at work, it introduces learners to the hazards and risks of manual handling and the controls available. This course covers manual handling risk assessments and includes discussing all practical elements and equipment available in the workplace.
Topics covered include:
- Reasons for managing manual handling risks
- Health and Safety legislation relating to manual handling
- Manual handling equipment
- How the principles of safe handling can contribute to improving the health, safety and well-being of the workforce
- Efficient Movement Principles
- Pre-transfer assessment/dynamic risk assessment
The certification will be accredited by Qualsafe after passing a 15 question multi choice exam, taken online, and invigilated via zoom.
Spaces are limited (8) and will be issued on a first come, first served basis.
Diversification into minor crops

Join Chris Creed (Senior Horticulture Consultant, ADAS) as he talks about minor and novel crops that provide an opportunity for Welsh growers to either sell produce fresh, add value or use as a vehicle for farm tourism.
This can include asparagus, hops, novel vegetables and “Instagram fields” where the public visit the farm for photo opportunities and a day out. Novel crops can also be a good offer to create some extra interest in an existing farm retail enterprise.
Christmas tree network study trip

The Tyfu Cymru Christmas Tree Network is delighted to be hosting a study visit to Gower Fresh Christmas Trees. Gower Fresh Christmas trees is home to the now fifth generation Morgan Family and is run by Robert Morgan. Gower fresh Christmas trees, was once a typical farm with 500 breeding sheep and 200 cattle, due to the foot and mouth outbreak and poor returns in the livestock market, Robert saw an opportunity for quality, sensible priced Christmas Trees. Their first trees were planted in 1997. They are now one of Wales largest Christmas tree growers and their hard work and dedication has led to them winning awards such as the British Christmas Tree Grower Association Grower of the year 2017.
Janet Allen from ADAS will lead the visit and topics for discussion will be:
- Preparing for Christmas tree harvest
- Autumn/early winter herbicide use
- Scouting for presence of and autumn pest control
- Identifying disease problems
- Preparing for planting in winter 2021 & late winter/early spring 2022
- Is integrated pest & disease control an option for Christmas trees?
- Soil & needle analysis timing & methods of sampling for the most reliable results
Meet at Gower Fresh Christmas Trees 10:30 am with the study trip to conclude approx. 3.30pm.

Nut network study trip

Tyfu Cymru is delighted to be hosting a study visit to Warwickshire Walnuts.
Following the success of our Nut Power Hour Tom Tame from TR Tame & Son – Granary Oils & Warwickshire Walnuts will share his knowledge further, With full washing, drying, cracking, shelling capability they sell walnuts as whole nuts, shelled, and make them into products. He will show us the machinery used in these processes.
Tom has a young walnut orchard (<10yrs) with some mature seedling trees, they harvest their own walnuts, collect locally and also source from other areas of the UK..
Tom imports and sells selected grafted cultivars for the garden, farm and commercial growers. These include grafted trees of Juglans & Carya -Heartnuts, Hickories, Pecans and Pecan Hybrids.
During the visit we will also be given a tour of the orchard, which will still have nuts on the trees and the potted grafted trees.
