Elevating Standards: The Launch of BICS 2025
Date: Tuesday 21st January 2025
Lantra, together with key partners within the Bridge Community, is proud to officially launch the enhanced Bridge Inspector Certification Scheme (BICS 2025) on Tuesday, 21st January 2025. This significant update marks a new era for the scheme, featuring substantial improvements designed to streamline processes, elevate standards, and enhance the experience for candidates.
Lantra’s commitment to continuous improvement and industry excellence is at the heart of BICS 2025. By incorporating valuable feedback from existing candidates and stakeholders, the new scheme introduces modernised tools and innovative resources aimed at fostering greater accessibility, efficiency, and inclusivity.
Key Enhancements of BICS 2025
Knowledge-Based Online Test:
A new, independently regulated online assessment, with easy access, enables candidates to demonstrate their knowledge and awareness of core and specific aspects of bridge structures; evaluating Inspectors’ knowledge in critical areas such as structural behaviour, material science, safety protocols, and broader inspection practices.
Streamlined e-Portfolio:
The updated e-Portfolio system simplifies how Inspectors document their experience and proficiency. By adopting a more concise and holistic approach, the new format eliminates unnecessary complexity and focuses exclusively on practical experience and competencies.
Introduced of Associate Inspector Certification:
A brand-new entry-level certification, the Associate Inspector, has been introduced. Candidates will achieve this designation upon successfully completing the online knowledge-based test. Certified Associate Inspectors will receive a digital e-Card issued by Lantra, serving as a gateway to further professional growth.
BICS Community Hub:
To promote collaboration and knowledge sharing, Lantra is launching an online BICS Community Hub. This interactive platform connects experienced Inspectors with emerging professionals, fostering mentorship opportunities, sharing best practices, and providing access to key experts and up-to-date industry news.
Benefits to the Industry
BICS 2025 establishes a transparent and independently assured quality standard for bridge inspection professionals. By supporting both employee development and employer confidence, the scheme reinforces a commitment to safety, excellence, and professional growth across the highways sector.
Danni Fagan-Shaw, Project Manager for BICS at Lantra, highlighted the importance of the improved scheme:
“The enhancements announced today represent a major milestone in Lantra’s dedication to advancing professional development and upholding safety standards within the highways sector”.
