Agri Leadership Week 2023 -
Hear from Director of Wales
Kevin Thomas

We all know that agriculture and food production is a fast-paced and demanding industry, so it's often easy to forget about your own continual professional development.

According to a 2022 survey conducted by by TIAH and the University of Exeter, nearly 75% of employers have not carried out any formal management or leadership training themselves in the last three years.

Just under 50% of people surveyed felt that all employers would benefit from leadership training too.

As a result, we're hoping to help raise awareness about how training opportunities can help improve personal and professional growth - along with individuals’ capacity as an employer and manager - during the joint #AgriLeadershipWeek campaign.

Kevin Thomas is Director for Lantra Wales and for 14 years he has delivered training to rural businesses to improve leadership skills, supported by Welsh Government.

He and his family run an organic beef and sheep farm in the Brecon Beacons, therefore he fully appreciates the importance and value of investing in your own leadership development.

"Farms are complex enterprises and investing in your development as a leader is a key to increasing your overall effectiveness as a manager" Kevin comments. "At the same time strong management and leaderships skills will help you in attracting, developing, and retaining talent, providing direct benefits over time to your bottom line."

#AgriLeadershipWeek is aimed at current and aspiring leaders in farming and growing who are unaware of, or are yet to make use of, any leadership training, with several land-based organisations including the NFU, AHDB and TIAH showcasing the benefits of leadership development.

"Lantra offer one-day interactive training and in-depth courses in leadership and management nation-wide, covering the foundational knowledge needed to become a successful leader, including change management, personal development and decision-making."

"We can help you reach your potential and develop your skills – helping you lead your team, reach your goals and make your farm business more resilient."
