Landscape is the design, planning, creation and maintenance of designed landscapes, both urban and rural, and the interiors of buildings. It involves everything from managing sports turf, golf courses, parks and historic gardens to planning domestic gardens and leisure facilities.
Some businesses work on large projects such as motorway landscape construction, while others provide services such as domestic gardening or paving.
It is estimated that the landscape industry is made up of nearly 8,000 businesses employing approximately 140,000 people. These people are employed in a range of different sized organisations such as local authority departments, parks and gardens; domestic and commercial landscape companies; and small, self-owned landscape contracting businesses.
