Skills London 2008

Visit Lantra on stand C20 at Skills London held at ExCeL on 20-22 November 2008. Skills London aims to introduce 14-19 year olds to employment and training opportunities and encourages them to take positive decisions about their future.

The event organizer is London First, a business-led organisation at the forefront of realigning skills training to better meet the needs of London’s employers and would-be employees. Skills London 2008 is a key part of the business community’s efforts to work with Government agencies, skills training providers and employers to combat social exclusion and help young people from every community reach their full potential through worthwhile employment.

Skills London 2008 will highlight every type of career through hands-on demonstrations and interactive activities. Visitors will cook up a storm in the hospitality zone, jour towards success in the transport zone, strike a pose in the creative zone and build an ambitious vision for their future in the construction zone.

Skills London 2008 will showcase opportunities that many young people may not have considered or even know exist. It will give 14-19 year olds from across London and the South East the chance to improve their skills and discover the range of opportunities available. At the same time it will give employers and training providers a unique platform to address their recruitment challenges and invest in the future of London.

London First Chief Executive, Baroness Jo Valentine said:
“The event will encourage young people to gain the right employability skills as they come into the jobs market for the first time. Initial funding support from London Learning and Skills Council and the London Development Agency ensures that Skills London 2008 will be a high profile event, engaging for young people and productive for the organisations exhibiting for them at ExCeL London. Our involvement in this event represents just one of the ways in which we are tackling the skills and employability issues facing London, and the needs of London’s businesses.”

John Denham, Secretary of State for Innovation, University and Skills said: “This careers and training event for young people in London is very welcome and very timely. Bringing young people together with employers, colleges, universities, training providers and advisers – and with each other – is an excellent idea. The event will help young people find out more about the huge range of opportunities available to them and to decide what best suites their own particular needs and aspirations.”

“When planning your future, knowledge is power – even young people who think they already know what they want to do may get some new ideas. I am grateful to the organisers of the event and all those who are taking part in it. I hope it will be a great success.”

Every school and college across London and the South East has been alerted to the opportunities offered by Skills London 2008, to ensure that every 14-19 year old has the opportunity to attend.
