National Student Database pilot a success!

Lantra’s National Student Database has just concluded a successful six week pilot in eight Landex colleges across the UK, resulting in 75% of students and tutors wanting to definitely use the system again.

Barony, Bishop Burton, Duchy, Lackham, Otley, Sparsholt, Warwickshire and the Welsh College of Horticulture all took part in the trial of the National Student Database, the first of its kind, designed to help ensure alignment between industry and education.

Based on Lantra’s Online Competence Framework (OCF), the National Student Database enables skills and qualifications to be recorded, career options evaluated and skills gaps identified. It also enables the development and recording of “Key Skills”, such as application of number and “Soft Skills” including leadership and teamwork - a new addition to the OCF’s functionality.

The system itself includes information on all Lantra’s Sector Approved job role Profiles, across 17 industry sectors (nearly 600 in total). Based on National Occupational Standards, these allow students to search careers and identify the exact qualifications and experience they need for their desired profession. Being an online system, access is available any time, any place, any where there is internet.

Whilst the benefits for students are clear, the Database also has fantastic benefits for colleges by supporting the delivery of the curriculum. The comprehensive technology allows tutors to effectively work with their students, using the same online system to set targets, prioritise development requirements and check achievements.

The National Student Database enables tutors to efficiently monitor their students and saves them valuable time by reducing administration work. Tutors are able to use the system to generate reports for training needs analysis and then search for courses and events to fill any gaps identified.

Pilot Results

Comprehensive feedback from the pilot has now been compiled and tutors found it extremely useful for information, advice and guidance as it helped students target their development and identify their strengths and weaknesses in relation to career goals. It also provided a good opportunity for students to see the connection between qualification and work experience, and had a range of other benefits such as help track activity and aid the structure of tutorials.

The students found it particularly beneficial to have all career information in one place, and could search potential job roles and consider options, on an online system that was easy to navigate. The fact that they could easily maintain a CV that was endorsed, and so provided a ready reference for their skills and qualifications, also proved advantageous.

The colleges also identified some other areas which would be useful, and Lantra is now working to implement these system enhancements whilst is in discussion with Landex regarding the imminent launch in September.
