Leadership and management

For UK industries to compete in the global marketplace, the skills of managers and leaders must be up-to-date.

Currently, 85% of UK organisations are small or micro businesses, resulting in unique problems for the manager that can be addressed through appropriate training.

The skills of our industry leaders are needed to increase the value placed on training and skills development in the workplace.

The Sector Skills Council’s Business Skills Board is leading a number of projects to address these issues, specifically aimed at the small/micro business owner/manager.

Action Learning for Leaders

This is a programme where an ‘action learning set’ – a group of six to nine managers – meet at regular intervals to explore real problems or opportunities.

Each member in turn works on their ‘task’ and the others provide support and challenge. The aim is to help each manager to tackle the task and to learn from the process. The participants are then encouraged to return to their organisations, apply the learning and report back to the group on progress.

Management National Occupational Standards (NOS)

National Occupational Standards for management have been developed with industry employers and training providers. They can help to:

  • Benchmark performance

  • Prepare job advertisements and descriptions

  • Identify training needs

  • Clarify skills expected of new employees

  • Take on new areas of activity (by acting as a checklist)

  • Develop your organisation and improve your current practice.

SkillsActive and the Management Standards Centre (MSC) have been working together to promote the implementation of the Management National Occupational Standards (NOS). This includes appointing SSC 'champions' to work with their Sector Skills Councils and employers to raise awareness of the standards.

The standards are being actively promoted in all UK countries and regions.
