Case studies

By offering advice, business development and addressing skills issues, Lantra has helped many people in fencing develop their skills and improve their businesses.

Our business champions have interesting tales to tell about how development and, in some cases, diversification has changed their lives for the better.

Have you developed your skills, and how has this helped your business? Tell us your story.

In just six years Staffordshire Moorlands Fencing Constructors Limited has grown from a two man start-up company to a flourishing business with 25 staff offering a diverse range of industrial and domestic fencing services.

Director Malcolm Mycock attributes this success to the company’s commitment on quality and value, plus their decision to work with South Staffordshire College’s Rodbaston campus for staff training.

Malcolm's background and enthusiasm for wildlife conservation is reflected in the company’s client portfolio – in addition major construction customers such as the Keir Group and the domestic market, customers have included the RSPB and Blackpool Zoo.

Going that extra step and completing an NVQ is what Haydn Nelms believes should be standard across the industry, to help its professional image and rid the industry of the cowboys bringing it down.

Jessica Simmons, Fensec Ltd.

Robert and Jessica Simmons, who have launched their own specialist fencing company in South West England, are well aware of the importance of training.

Helen Haigh, Peerless Fencing Ltd.

Fencing

Helen and Chris Haigh who run Peerless Fencing in Preston, Lancashire, want all their staff to be as highly trained as possible. Their ambition is not just a matter of pride - and living up to the company name - but also a tribute to their late father, John, who started the business.

Crosby Cleland, Proprietor of Crosby Cleland Fencing

Crosby Cleland
Crosby Cleland's first fencing project was on his own farm back in 1974.  Subsequently he was approached by both neighbours and plant contractors to carry out fencing on their behalf, so in 1976 he established Crosby Cleland Fencing.

Jonathan Dalby and Grant Brown - Ilkeston fencing

Ilkeston Fencing

Training apprentices is a significant investment for Ilkeston Fencing, but one Managing Director Paul Matthewman is happy to make. He believes apprenticeships will 'and should' become the norm for the fencing industry.
